Pupil Premium

Raising the achievement of the disadvantaged

What is Pupil Premium?

The pupil premium is a government scheme that was introduced to improve the education of underprivileged children. It was launched after several research papers suggested that there was a significant gap between the educational performance of disadvantaged children and their classmates.

The scheme aims to grant schools extra funding so that they’re able to provide additional support for children who are faced with additional challenges. The objective is to help schools unlock the learning potential of their pupils and provide them with a better education. It also aspires to narrow the gap in educational development between children of underprivileged backgrounds and their peers.

Pupil Premium funding supports pupils who are currently eligible for free school meals, or who have been eligible for free school meals at any point in the last six years. The funding equates to £1455 per eligible primary school child and £2530 per pupil for looked-after children who have been looked after for 1 day or more, are adopted or are under a Special Guardianship Order or Residence Order.

How we spend the funding:

Schools are free to spend the Pupil Premium as they see fit.  However, they are accountable for how they use the additional funding to support pupils from low-income families and the other target groups.

Our approach is carefully considered and planned and is based on recommendations by the Education Endowment Fund (EEF) in that it promotes:

 -  Quality first teaching strategies and best practice

 -  Targeted academic support to allow all children to achieve and succeed

 - Wider strategies to ensure non-academic factors are promoted to allow all children to participate, achieve and enjoy their education and all that school can offer Education Endowment Fund Pupil Premium Guide

At Nightingale Primary School we are committed to meeting the needs of all pupils eligible for the pupil premium grant, both to support their academic needs and their social and emotional needs. We use an evidence-based approach and regularly evaluate the impact our approaches are having on children’s needs.

You can read how we have spent this funding in 2023-23Pupil Premium Strategy Statement 2022-23 and how we planned to spend it in 2023-24Pupil Premium Strategy Statement 2023-24

Pupil Premium information is updated on our website by 31st December each year.
